I Chronicles 4:9-10 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name [c]Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my [d]territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So, God granted him what he requested.
This passage introduces us to Jabez, a man whose name meant pain, yet whose prayer has inspired generations. When Jabez asked God to “bless me indeed,” he wasn’t chasing the shallow blessings we often think of, the kind we jokingly say when someone sneezes or the kind Esau wept over when he realized his father’s blessing had been stolen. Instead, Jabez left the definition of blessing entirely in God’s hands, trusting that whatever God called good would be good for him. His faith mirrors Romans 8:28, believing that God works all things for the good of those who love Him. And when we sincerely seek God’s blessing, our lives begin to show the fingerprints of His miracles, the very gifts He prepared for us but that we never asked for, just like the story of Mr. Jones arriving in heaven to find rooms full of unopened blessings. Scripture reminds us that some blessings only come when we ask (Matthew 7:7; James 4:2). Yet many of us hesitate: we fear God will say no, we feel unworthy, or we worry we’ve already received too much. Jabez broke free from that thinking. He understood that God’s nature is to bless, and he refused to let his past, his name, or his limitations define him. Instead, he told God who he longed to become. Jabez was ready for the next level, unafraid of success, unafraid of God’s abundance, and confident that the Father who loves His children delights in giving good gifts. His prayer invites us to ask boldly, trust deeply, and step into the life God desires to shape within us.
Don't just love Him. Live Him.Don't just LVE Him.LVE Him.
