The 6th Beatitude

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Hunger is something we have all felt at some time in our lives and it is usually not a good feeling' Sometimes it is a physical hunger other times it is a mental, emotional or spiritual hunger. Hunger is the indicator that we need something that we are lacking in our lives or bodies.

Jesus tells us that when we hunger or thirst after righteousness, we will be filled.

Righteousness is not simply about trying harder to be a good person. It is a deep desire to know God, to walk in His ways, and to have our hearts transformed by His presence. Just as a hungry person seeks food and a thirsty person seeks water, a believer should earnestly seek God's truth, wisdom, and holiness. When we make God our greatest pursuit, He satisfies the deepest needs of our souls in ways that nothing else in this world can.

Many people try to fill the emptiness in their lives with success, possessions, relationships, or personal achievements, yet they often remain unsatisfied. The reason is that we were created for fellowship with God, and only He can truly satisfy the longing of the human heart. Jesus promises that those who sincerely seek righteousness will be filled. This filling is not temporary like earthly satisfaction, but a lasting supply of God's peace, joy, strength, and purpose.

This beatitude is both an invitation and a promise. It invites us to examine what we are truly hungry for and to direct our desires toward God. It also assures us that God never ignores those who seek Him with a sincere heart. As we daily hunger and thirst after righteousness through prayer, worship, and obedience to His Word, we will discover that God faithfully fills us with His presence and shapes us into the people He has called us to be.
