Continued Teaching on Beattitudes: Blessed are Those Who Mourn

Matthew 5:4, Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Once again, this beatitude starts with a less than positive beginning. Jesus doesn’t pretend that following Him removes sorrow from our lives. He speaks directly to the reality that every one of us will walk through seasons of loss, disappointment, grief, and deep ache. Mourning is not a sign of weakness , it is evidence that we have loved, hoped, and cared deeply.
But Jesus attaches a promise to this pain: comfort. Not the shallow comfort the world offers, but the healing presence of God Himself. The blessing is not found in the mourning; the blessing is found in the God who steps into it with us. He draws near to the brokenhearted. He sits with us in the silence. He holds us when words fail. His comfort is not distant or delayed, it is personal, present, and powerful.
And this comfort is more than soothing; it is restoring. God does not waste sorrow. In His hands, mourning becomes a doorway to deeper intimacy with Him. It becomes the soil where compassion grows, where faith strengthens, and where hope is reborn. The promise of Jesus reminds us that mourning is not the end of the story. Comfort is coming. Healing is coming. Joy is coming. The God who meets us in our tears is also the God who lifts our heads.
